Welcome To Choose Green Arizona
Are you ready to choose green? Do you believe consumers can demand change? What is green? Who is really green? If you are ready, this site is for you.
Why the doors at the top of this page? Because there are many doors you can choose from for health - homeopathy, yoga, naturopathy, massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, energy medicine, oriental medicine - and more.
Health care is not simply a matter of which doctor one goes to, or which particular branch of the healing arts one espouses. Health embraces our food, our air, our environment, our energy, our thoughts. Those who manufacture furniture and build buildings are just as much a part of the healing of the planet as those who grow our food and make cleaning products.
With so many jumping on the green bandwagon today, it can be tricky to sort out the hype from the reality. Are you a parent concerned about your children’s health? Want to understand how yoga is one person’s health insurance? Know of a green drycleaners? Want to compare notes on farmers' markets? That's where this online community comes in.
The word “doctor" comes from the Latin "docere" meaning to teach. And that is what the founding educators do. This site was founded by Dr. Doris Rapp and others involved in the “green medicine” fields in Arizona. We have done something never done before - established an organic communication forum to get beyond the institutional messages. Good health is about medicine AND about what’s in our environment - what kind of food we eat, and what ingredients are in everything from the plastic bottles we drink out of, to the soap we put on our skin. Connect here to grow a healthier, greener community.

“Teens Turning Green is a national coalition of teens educating peers and community members about safe, healthy, and green lifestyle choices. The campaign focuses on the daily chemical exposures in our schools and communities that harm our health. Teens across the country work to advocate for policy change to protect our health and inspire actions that sustain our earth.”

“While the kids take their afternoon nap, their mothers are dedicated to making their homes healthy, one sippy cup at a time. They are concerned with the chemicals used in shampoo, soap, lotion and other other sunscreen household products. After watching the “Oprah Winfrey Show” the trio began researching the content of the products. They bring a white binder to weekly play dates. Inside is neatly highlighted and organized pages on BPA, sodium lauryl sulfate and petrolatum and the health problems they cause…”
That’s an excerpt from an April 17, 2008 article in the Desert Sun, a Palm Springs newspaper. Want to start a moms' group? Contact us and we can give you information to get you started.
I had an interesting discussion several weeks ago with a man who asked me how it came to be that we think we can engineer food better than God made it by splicing pesticides and antibiotics into plants and seeds. Good question. “Our great grandparents didn’t eat genetically modified food or use personal care products full of chemicals that mimic hormones. They were taught their body is a temple. Are the churches and synagogues ready talk about what we need to do to get ourselves and our kids healthy again?” Good question.

In 1997, a charter high school in Appleton, Wisconsin, embarked on a novel experiment. The school was described as out-of-control: weapons violations, student disruptions, and a police officer on duty full-time. With the help of Barbara and Paul Stitt, the school replaced their cafeteria’s processed foods with wholesome, nutritious food. After the change, students were calm, focused, orderly, and grades were up. There were no more weapons violations, and no suicides, expulsions, dropouts, or drug violations. The project clearly demonstrated that food is information for the brain. Indeed. We are just beginning to understand the influence of food on behavior. A study in Science in December 2002 concluded that “food molecules act like hormones, regulating body functioning and triggering cell division. The molecules can cause mental imbalances ranging from attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder to serious mental illness.”
